Since I was bored and planned to start the campaign again I thought I'd pay attention to levels this time. I've made it to 30 in every game except my first but never really paid attention to what level I was on which map. If anyone's interested, here's the story so far...

Greyfell 3
Liannon 4.5
Eloni 7.75
Leafshade 10.25
The Shiel 12
Wildland Pass 13
Greyfell part two (plus tying up loose end quests) 14
Northern Windwalls 15
Southern Windwalls 15.5
Greydusk Vale 17.5
Stoneblade 19.5

Each level rounded to nearest 0.25 and measured when I'd completed the map.

I'm just about to enter the howling mounds so I'll post an update on following levels later. The only thing I've done differently this time through is leave the greyfell camps intact to see if I could get more exp when I came back through. Ordinarily they spawn so infrequently, and just level 1's, that I don't bother. The only difference it's made is that the "To Greyfell" quest won't close. The bit saying "carry on to the east" (or whatever it is) won't go away even now the camps are destroyed. I guess it's made no real difference because the main quest still continues.

I haven't played real far yet but I would think that the Shiel would be a good place to level mainly with the archer towers at the Elf camp in the beginning.

You could just let the towers take over for a few hours and kill hundreds of enemies racking up easy xp points.

Just a thought.

PS my highest character a Hvy Pally just finished The Shiel at lvl 12, well a few ticks short of 12.

Completed a bit more so here's the levels I finished at in:

Howling Mounds 20.5
Whisper 22
Leafshade part two (Flink's quest) 22.5
Godwall 23

Well, almost 23 and I realised I hate this map. Not that it's difficult or anything, far from it. It's just tedious and for what? The chests contain sucky items, the spell drops are lower level than whisper and the exp S-T-I-N-K-S, esp considering that you're fighting a lot of lvl 12 -20 troops with a lvl 9 rune, even if the rapid spawns dry up in under 2 hrs. Not to mention all that walking. It's a visually impressive map to look at but you'd think the effort of climbing the damn wall wouldn't make you want to bash your head against one irl LOL.

Hmm, better point out, for all you ppl wanting to power level (and haven't got here yet) that this map isn't designed for it. The spawns dry up fast for one thing and for another, if you want food before you grow old then you have to kill the spawn points, at least prior to the dwarf camp that is. Instead of building towers near spawns (never did like that trick and don't use it myself) try blocking off a switchback on the wall itself with towers, pretty much everything comes to you anyway this way.

Anyways, just entered Mulandir and dinged to 23 plus some spare so I may clear the map before moving on to the rift or farlorn's hope, just so I can give an accurate account of exp gained.

It only works for 2.5 hours or so, because after awhile they don't send big forces anymore. For example; Stoneblade. After I build up my base and pumped every entrance full with towers, I got rushed by Mino's and Trolls for 2 hours. But after those 2 hours it stopped... No more attacks. Also note that you get less exp after awhile...

not much to it , it can be reduced to the following guide ( with a few humor twitches)

Trollwarlord2's handy guide for lame campi...did i say that? i mean creeping

1. camp ...i mean place towers near spawnpoints of creeps

2. cheat....whoops , there i go again , i mean : use the magic codes of ultimate power to destroy your enemies (not cheating!)
cheater

3.do all the booorin.....*hears snipergun reloadingh sounds from the JoWood office* i mean amazingly fun side quests and get crap * again sniper sound aiming* ..wonderfull objects as a prise

4. and if that all fails , unleash your magical power of a thousand pokes!!! (that means hacking your character , you cheater!!!)

Here's the complete list

Greyfell 3
Liannon 4.5
Eloni 7.75
Leafshade 10.25
The Shiel 12
Wildland Pass 13
Greyfell part two (plus tying up loose end quests) 14
Northern Windwalls 15
Southern Windwalls 15.5
Greydusk Vale 17.5
Stoneblade 19.5
Howling Mounds 20.5
Whisper 22
Leafshade part two (Flink's quest) 22.5
Godwall 23
Mulandir 23.75
The Rift 26.25
Farlorn's Hope 26.75
Mulandir part two (the bit with Mechlan) 27
Frostmarches 28.25
Southern Godmark 29
Nightwhisper Dale (prior to army building) plus Blood quest 29.5
Nightwhisper Dale with army 29.95 (majorly bored of trying for exp when fast spawns ran out. Although exp is still coming it's extremely slow)

Most all maps there was still exp to be gained when I left them but it'd take someone with much more patience (or the will to leave the pc running alone) to gain anymore than I did. I didn't time myself because it was impossible to do so accurately but best guess is 4-6 hrs per map on average. At no point did I build towers around spawn points or leave the computer running while I was afk, at least not for longer than it took me to grab a drink/food/other. Save for the last entry, all levels are round up or down to the nearest 0.25 but mostly I was so close to the indicated quarter level that I didn't really need to round the figures off.

Getting to level 30 prior to the breathing forrest is not that difficult, just a little more boring than simply ploughing through the game. The above is indicative of most of my games, give or take a half level here or there since I'm usually either 30 by breathing forrest or ding to 30 while I'm there.

If anyone is interested the character I used was a pure mage: fire 12, ice 12, death 12 with base 98 int, 98 wis, 40 con and 39 agi. No healing and no melee whatsoever. I died once during the whole game, in Liannon to the human bandits. I recieved exp for all quests except in Farlorn's Hope where I recieved nothing for getting alchemy supplies from Farlorn.

Hmm, thats very interesting. Could you pls detail you tactics for getting exp? I'm at level 14 after Northern Windfalls and wondering how did i miss a level worth of exp.

About exp from monster - in on the faqs i read that
1) You get more exp for higher level monsters (pretty obvious)
2) You get less and less exp for killing same kind of monsters over and over.

So it means that that should restrain yourself from killing a lot of low-level monsters till you meet higher-level versions.

Can anybody confirm this ?

Your right, it is better to wait untill you meet higher versions of a monster before you start powergaming on it.

@Drauk

I generally play a defensive game on most maps. That is to say I sit and wait behind towers (I don't build them over spawn points as IMO this is cheesy). There are exceptions to defensive play though. Eloni and Leafshade for example.

In Eloni I tend to wait only a short time before I rush to the elf city due to the fact that there are higher level orcs which spawn just past it and waiting until rapid spawning drys up also means waiting until the orc spawns dry up too. By the same token I try and kill as many beastmen as possible and I don't destroy the ogre mine immediately there either. Behind towers it's relatively easy to fight a two front battle (orcs and beastmen/ogres) here.

Similarly in Leafshade, I tend to wipe out goblin spawns since I've killed enough goblins by this point. Instead I concentrate on the humans and more orcs where possible.

No idea if this is what nets me more exp than you gained so far or not (I only play this way) but I do keep playing until I am bored of a map (usually a few hrs) and then move on. Alternatively I set myself a reasonable exp goal (like get a level or 1.5 levels on this particular map), something I know I can handle in terms of not becoming bored. However, short of writing a full walkthrough and comparing notes it's hard to say exactly how I gain more exp than you have. I just know that out of well over a dozen games I only ever finished prior to level 30 once and that was my first game.

Best place to powerlevel is in Farlorn's Hope.

The elite wolfs that stand guard in front of the camp are born out of a special spawn point that never dries up. As soon as half of them is dead it starts spawning at incredible speed (one is out next one the following second, and so on). Destroying the buildings and Briar doesn't affect this spawner. Only thing that stops it is the cutscene where the assassin does his dirty work.

What you gotta do==> build an incredible tower wall in front of the camp and place your army between the towers. The wolves will continuously attack and die.
Once you want to move on (after level 100 ) you simply go to the assassin and give him all the required items. The last wolves will try and attack the "red hands" camp and die as well.
Talking about powerleveling...

Also don't kill all the Guardians in Blademountain. Kill four of them and let the fifth one finish the ritual, after which he will disappear and a (at that point) allmighty lvl 17 golem will appear (By the side of the beastmans passage way)
Hint: Place ice towers, a titan and twenty healers, otherwise you risk to get squashed as a bug

Greetings

i tried a different approach to killing the briars elite at farlorn's hope. i built a massive tower field south of my camp with my army and avatar also in position there. i then activated the assassin bit and waited for the briars to walk through my trap on their way to halicos' camp. after killing the whole lot of them, loosing 2/3 of my towers and most of my army, i was expecting to have received tons of exp. did i? nope! i didnt notice any gains in exp or money (although i didnt pay much attention to the money) and no item drops either. oh well.

Briars giving exp? since when do they do that? The only way I could think of getting exp from them is by giving those wolf signs to the red legion commander.
